To keep their hopes alive at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, its do-or-die for Jurgen Klinsmanns team on Thursday, the United States mens soccer team comes into its final group match against Germany (Thursday, 12 p.m. ET, ESPN) at the event with a 1-0-1 record. For the United States, the scenarios to advance to the knockout stage are as follows: 1. USA win/draw: Either scenario means the U.S. will advance no matter the other result in the group. In fact, a victory means the U.S. will win the group and advance to play Algeria, rather than Belgium, in the first knockout round. 2. USA lose, while Portugal and Ghana draw: This will also mean that the U.S. advance, but Germany will win the group. 3. USA lose, while Portugal win: Unless the wins for Germany and Portugal are blowouts, this result would also mean good things for the United States. A 4-0 loss to Germany in the opening match put a serious dent in Portugals goal differential, and theyll have to turn up the heat to make up for it. 4. USA lose, while Ghana win: The Ghanaians have a close goal difference with the U.S. Anything greater than a one-goal loss by USA against Germany, plus a one-goal win by Ghana, will lead to elimination for the Americans.
