To mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the World War One on July 28, 1914, the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission has collaborated with the Washington National Cathedral to release liturgical resources, for use on Sunday, July 27, 2014, to commemorate that tragic global conflict. “The Cathedrals development of a common liturgy for the centennial of World War I reminds us that the war, in the end, was a profound human failure,” said Commissioner and Acting Chairman Colonel Robert J. Dalessandro, USA (Ret.). “The words prepared by the Cathedral remind us that the centennial is a time for sorrow, not for celebration, and an occasion for peoples of all faiths and all nations to join together in remembrance and in prayer to the divine that such a tragedy will never befall the world again.” Rev. Canon Gina Gilland Campbell, canon precentor, who oversees worship at the Cathedral, agreed. “As the country begins a four-year examination on the lasting legacy of World War I, Washington National Cathedral is privileged to partner with the World War I Commission by creating resources for faith communities to guide their prayer and reflection in worship, I hope these resources capture the particularity of World War I and the inhumanity of war. And at the same time, I hope they reflect the deep longing of God that those whom God has made might live together in peace.” The US World War One Centennial Commission invites all faith communities to reflect on the suffering of that time and resolve to avoid such suffering in the future. These resources may be used wholly or in part with freedom to modify them for use by your congregation The Sunday, July 27, 2014, resources may be found at tinyurl/WW1Centennial-July27worship Additional commemorative worship resources may be found at tinyurl/WW1Centennial-worship.
