To our Maryland Clients – we just read an informative article about how the Maryland legislature has made the first major change to the state’s estate tax exemption rules since 2002. The new law phases in increases of the current Maryland estate tax exemption from $1 million to equal the then-current federal estate tax exemption by 2019 and beyond. This new law is expected to make significant reductions in the number of Maryland clients who will need estate tax planning in the future. Maryland still has an inheritance tax as well as the estate tax, but changes in the inheritance tax rules over the years have reduced the numbers of estates affected by the law. For more details on Maryland death tax changes, please read this article: wealthmanagement/estate-planning/maryland-raises-estate-tax-exemption As for how these changes affect you and your family, Tim Leighton would be honored to meet with Clients and review changes in law and your own circumstances in order to consider potential changes to your plans. Please contact the firm to set an appointment by phone or in person during Tim’s upcoming trip to visit Clients in Maryland, DC and Virginia. Applicable fees will be reviewed with Clients when setting the appointment.
