JAMES BEATTIE — NOVEMBER 18, 2014 A new survey shows approval for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), colloquially known as Obamacare, has dropped to a new low. According to a poll conducted November 6-9 by Gallup, only 37 percent of Americans approve of Obamacare while 56 disapprove. The approval rating for Obamacare comes just after the midterm elections where Republicans won the Senate and strengthened their hold in the House of Representatives. While 74 percent of Democrats approve of the ACA, only 33 percent of independents approve and a staggering 8 percent of Republicans approve. From Gallup: “Americans have never been overly positive toward the ACA, at best showing a roughly equal division between approval and disapproval early on in the law’s implementation. The percentage of Americans who approve of the law represents a new numerical low, which could indicate a loss of faith in the law amid the aftermath of the 2014 midterms.” On Saturday, Healthcare.gov started its second year of enrollment, and Politico reported some minor glitches occurred, including consumers receiving “notice that the annual enrollment period was closed, signaling that not all pages on the website had been successfully updated. Others reported having initial trouble logging into their accounts.” This news has pundits and everyday Americans attributing the numbers to MIT economist Jonathan Gruber.
