Today, I had the pleasure of meeting a gentlemen who was part of the Frozen Chosin. If youre unfamiliar with their story, heres a brief synopsis. During the Korea War some 15,000 Marines were encircled at the Chosin River Basin, by some 150,000 Chinese soldiers. At certain points, they were outnumbers 100 to 1. Instead of retreating, they formed an 11 mile column behind one M4A3 Sherman tank and fought their way to the port city of Hungnam, in order for a proper evacuation to take place. In fact, its the largest evacuation by sea ever performed in American military history! Along the way, they inflicted some 39,000 casualties; effectively destroying the Chinese 9th Army. The Marines lost a little over 1,000 soldiers during the march. They carried their dead with them and it was a balmy -37 degrees for a majority of the 13 day and 78 mile march. 17 Medal of Honors were awarded and all 30,000 soliders who participated, were forever dubbed the Chosen Few. They also managed to save the lives of some 100,000 refugees along the way. So when people say America kicks ass; its totally true. Happy 4th of July!!!
