Today I remember the friends that I lost during World War 2. As - TopicsExpress

Today I remember the friends that I lost during World War 2. As part of the camera crew on the liberation of the Philippines we lost around 25% of the group which included the Battle of Manila. I remember oh so scared with a Pathe camera in my hand as part of the second landing on the beaches of Luzon. However somehow I took movies even with my hands shaking. I remember the liberation of a POW camp in Luzon where I watched starving American POWs coming out of the camp after the liberation. Those actually films are at the end of the flick The Great Raid starring James Franco. I remember the heavy block to block fighting in old town Manila where I was slightly wounded (not a million dollar wound I am afraid). I remember the surrender of the Japanese on the US Missouri where I was one of the photographers who took pictures of the signing. I remember going to Japan later where I was one of the photographers who took pictures of MacArthur meeting the Emperor of Japan. There were seven photographers in all if I remember correctly. Some people ask me Did I carry a gun during those times. My answer NO. Only a cameras either still or movie during those times. We were considered non combats but that did not stop from taking shots at us and yes some friendly fire accidentally
