Today I traveled inside of the DMZ to the actual border between North and South Korea. Protected by a few South Korean Soldiers and some UN soldiers we entered the JSA. This is the only place where the border line is not separated by 2 kilometers of demilitarization. (2km on each side of border.) we stared at North Korean soldiers as they took photos of us and watched us closely. we had orders not to point or make fast movements. we could not carry bags or anything in cases. we toured the room where the two sides meet, in the room we crossed over to North Korean soil. the only thing that protected us from them was a closed door and one korean soldier. Before we went we had toured the Korean war memorial. The US has an amazing one, but this one was so somber and humbling. Such a tragedy that this country has been through, from japanese occupation to the war between the sides. We reflected on the civil war and question what would be different if the north and south became two different places. We all agree that in our minds the Pacific Northwest would still be the most beautiful place on the planet, but ..... what if. It was a very somber day for the cougs. When people hear the term cougs in reference to WSU they expect high energy, enthusiasm, and pride. We had our pride, enthusiasm, and energy, but today we spent that reflecting on history. the cool thing about cougs is that they love to learn and experience. Today was my 16th wedding anniversary, this experience really allowed me to think about my family. We cannot be separated by politics, we will not fight to harm one another or take from one another. We stand united. I pray someday that the north and south of Korea can be reunited as a family. Their history has given so much to the world. Prayers for unity come from me.
