Today Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz charged (on NBC’s Meet the Press) that Washington has let the country down, and threatened if corporate America doesn’t see civility and conversation and cooperation in the next 30 days the business community is going to do what theyve done for the last 10 years: dismiss Washington.” The solution is for business leaders like himself to to take the lead and do what we can to move the country forward. P-l-e-a-s-e. A major reason for the incivility and gridlock is corporate America’s increasing lobbying and campaign spending (Starbucks spent $2,190,000 on lobbying last year alone). Another is Americans are in a sour mood because theyre working harder than ever and getting nowhere, while the pay of top executives is in the stratosphere (Starbucks pays its Baristas an average of $9 an hour; Schultz took home $149.8 million this past year). If Schultz and other CEOs really want to move the country forward they’ll stop spending so much on politics and their own pay, and start spending more on their employees. You agree?
