Today in History 1839—The Battle of Neches began. It was one of the major battles of the Cherokee War and was fought along the Neches River near the present-day Tyler. About 500 Texas troops routed 700-800 Cherokees led by Chief Bowl. The battle virtually ended Indian issues in the settled parts of Texas. 1888—"Printers’ Ink" was first sold. 1904—The first Buddhist temple in the U.S. was established in Los Angeles, CA. 1952—Patti Page made her TV debut in a summer replacement series for Perry Como. 1965—The spacecraft Mariner IV sent back the first close-up pictures of the planet Mars. 1973—Ray Davies announced that he was leaving The Kinks. He returned to the group within the week.
