Today in class my students were tasked with reading an essay that addresses how having a marginalized ethnic identity can impact language. For non-American students, racial politics like this can be very unfamiliar. They had questions and I tried to give answers. We ended up going 10 minutes over class time and not a single student stopped me or started packing up. I apologized, ended the lesson, but then half the class stayed after to talk with me about race, gender, freedom and empowerment. My class gets done at 4:30 pm! Some of them stayed nearly an hour! They apologized for taking my time. Are you kidding? I said. I told them their display of enthusiasm was my greatest teacher victory so far this semester.
