Today in classical music history for August 21st: The master violin maker Giuseppe Guarneri was born in Cremona, Italy, on this date in 1698. His craft made his home town a center of the stringed instrument trade for generations. Lili Boulanger, sister of the renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger and a prolific composer in her own right, was born on this date in 1893. She lived a mere 24 years. Gregg Smith, future founder of the Gregg Smith Singers – a highly influential choral ensemble – was born in Chicago on this date in 1931. And a very happy 81st birthday to one of the most accomplished and moving singers of the 20th century – Dame Janet Baker – who was born on August the 21st, 1933, in Yorkshire.
