Today is (or depending where you are, was) Tu Bishvat, the 15th - TopicsExpress

Today is (or depending where you are, was) Tu Bishvat, the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shvat. This is a (very) minor holiday on the Jewish calendar, also known as the New Year for Trees because it marks the the beginning of the agricultural cycle for the purpose of biblical tithes related to fruits. As it is a minor holiday the commemorations of it are fairly subdued; there is a custom to eat dried fruit and the Tachunun prayer is omitted in the synagogue. In modern Israel, during the pre-state period the planting of trees to redeem the land became a national mission. A custom arose where trees were specifically planted on Tu Bishvat. This custom continues until today, especially in schools. Therefore many millions of trees have been planted on Tu Bishvat over the years.
