Today, we celebrate ST PAISIOS VELICHKOVSKY Born in Ukraine to a priestly family, he went to seminary in Kiev but was disappointed by the worldliness. He left after 4 years, pursuing spiritual direction, and found Russian guides in Romania. He travelled to Mt Athos, but spiritual life was then at a low point. He stayed and became a hermit, devoting his days to prayer and reading Scripture & the Fathers. He was tonsured and directed to a monastery. A number of Romanian and Slavic brothers joined and Paisius became their reluctant abbot. The community returned to Romania in 1763, where they introduced the Athonite rule and hesychasm (including the Jesus Prayer), daily confession and full services. The brotherhood eventually grew to over 1000. St Paisius translated texts, and late in life he completed the translation project he is most well known for, translating the newly-compiled Philokalia into Slavonic - this led to widespread spiritual renewal and a restoration of traditional monasticism that would last for over 100 years. He reposed in 1794. + Plus +
