Today we must remember the sacrifices made by so many 13 years - TopicsExpress

Today we must remember the sacrifices made by so many 13 years ago. That day for many of us started like countless other days before. We were starting our days taking our children to school, going to work, or the countless other routines and rituals that were part of a Tuesday morning. That morning our normal was shattered in seconds. Our sense of safety and security was gone and we saw the very darkest side of humanity. We saw what blind ambition, selfishness and lack of mercy can do. It consumes like a raging fire all who hold it in their hearts. But what emerged wasn’t darkness. In the presence of devastation the light of hope, selflessness, sacrifice and service shined through and grew. One act of kindness and mercy was met by another, and then another. Citizens became rescuers and rescuers gave of themselves, many at the ultimate cost to serve their fellow man in time of need. In spite of the darkness that consumed that morning, hope, mercy, service and sacrifice triumphed. And that is the true legacy of that day 13 years ago. We don’t come together every year to remember the darkness or the fear but instead the triumph of the human spirit over such things. September 11 should be a reminder to each of us never to take any day for granted. They are all precious and fragile. It’s about giving fully of ourselves without reserving anything. We never know what darkness lurks at the next turn, but no matter for we are the light in that darkness. Every turn today, tomorrow and every day we have remaining is an opportunity to make a difference in the life of someone who needs that light, who needs hope and mercy. Darkness has no power in the light for light exposes its recesses. So let us remember those who put their fears aside to serve that morning. Let us remember their example and their sacrifice by carrying on their legacy of service. Let us not leave this day without making a difference in someone’s life through an act of service or kindness. When you leave here this morning, change the routine; memorialize those who gave of themselves that fateful morning by doing something outside of your norm. Call someone important in your life and tell them you love them, you never need a reason. If you pass by someone who seems to have struggles or worry, give them a smile or a greeting. If you see a soldier or someone in uniform take a moment to thank them for their service. When you see a colleague at work that is not having the best of days, ask them how they are doing and give them an ear. Let us leave this day and someone’s life brighter than we entered it. God bless and keep each of you today and every day and God bless the United States of America.
