Today, we took advantage of a teachable moment in Dolphins II! It was brought to our attention that 2 children made a comment to another child that their skin was too dark for a tattoo during a birthday party. We called our friends at the Harborfields Library Childrens Department who pulled several books for us that reinforce multicultural & anti-biased learning and appreciation as said beautifully by the folks of Cheltenham Elementary School. The kindergartners in that school wrote and illustrated We Are All Alike...We Are All Different! We read books today to reinforce that we are all very different--some of us like baseball, some of us have brothers, some of us have sisters, etc. Some of us have brown eyes, some of us have blond hair.... We read The Shades of People by Shelley Rotner talked about how people are different shades--almond, pink, cocoa, bronze...and that our skin is just our covering--like wrapping paper! We also enjoyed The Colors of Us by Karen Katz. We discussed how we may look different on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside--we all have feelings and we should all treat each other with respect. We are a class family and we all love each other! We should focus on celebrating and learning from our differences! We then baked two batches of white angel food cupcakes--one was made with brown eggs and the other was made with white eggs! Did you know that the insides are the same...even though the outside colors are different? Many of the children were surprised to learn this! The cake mixes both stayed white--and they smelled delicious when we baked them! Tomorrow, we will try to tell which batch was which before we add icing...I have a feeling we wont be able to tell :) Please ask your Dolphin II children about this activity to help us reinforce the importance of the message, We Are all Alike...We Are All Different. Thank You!
