Todays discussion is about the art of haggling. Last night I was sorely offended when some one made a $400 offer on a $1300 horse of mine. This mare is a finished western pleasure mare. She is trail safe, novice family safe (this family is as novice as they come) she is the nicest horse they are gonna find for a reasonable price. I told them I do not have vaccination records, the mare drops her grain so teeth should be checked and that because she is 19 senior feed is probably a good idea. This to her justified her $400 offer?! I guess I am confused as to when teeth and vaccines became a $900 job? People do not realize the value of a safe horse. This womans children were running around this horse in the arena screaming and this mare stood there quiet? Since when does having to maintain a horse by feeding it grain lower the value by $900? Especially since this family doesnt even know how to saddle. Granted they have a friend who is suppose to help and give them lessons, wouldnt this friend direct them to buy a horse exactly like this for their first horse?! Deals like this just piss me off. This person is gonna go out make the wrong decision and someone is gonna get hurt. This is only the second time ever someone has offered me under half for a horse. As much as I would like to say I enjoy screwing people over in the horse world, I price my horses reasonably in this market and I price them so people can have extra left over to do things like teeth and vaccines if the horse does not have record of it. Done venting for the day. Happy Monday yall!
