Todays earthquake indicates that the forces driving the recent earthquakes in the Minto region did not settle out following Mondays event. It indicates an ongoing stress. As the Noatak sequence this spring demonstrated, it is not possible to predict what will happen next. This could be the end of the sequence. However, we also need to allow for the distant possibility of a larger earthquake in the near future. The Minto region demonstrated in 1995 that it is capable of at least M6.5 earthquakes. That quake was 100 times more energetic than todays earthquake. We believe the recent activity is occurring on a different fault than 1995. Even so, 1995 is a cautious reminder of just one of the many possible outcomes from this current activity.
