Tomorrow I return to work at my volunteer job at the Closter Borough Hall. A sunny cool day today with temps around 30 degrees. I took a nice long walk to Ponside Park in my town and did 4 laps around the track while allots in a mile around the track. The San Francisco 49ers according to reports are set to promote Defensive Line Coach Jim Tomsula to become the teams next head coach. The following information is from an article from Yahoo Sports: After looking around at outside candidates, including a long talk with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers have apparently decided to stay in-house for their next head coach. The 49ers are set to promote Jim Tomsula, the defensive line coach, to head coach to replace Jim Harbaugh, ESPNs Adam Schefter first reported on Wednesday. Tomsulas name has been floated throughout the process, even back late last regular season when it was clear Harbaugh wasnt returning in 2015, but the timing is a bit surprising given the 49ers clear interest in Gase. They met with Gase most of the day on Tuesday, reports said. The move would keep Gase in play for the Denver Broncos, who need a head coach after parting ways with John Fox. Tomsula has been an NFL head coach for one game. In 2010, after Mike Singletary was fired, Tomsula stepped in as interim head coach for the season finale and the 49ers won. Harbaugh retained Tomsula on his staff. Tomsula has been with the 49ers as defensive line coach since 2007, so the organization is very familiar with him. He was in NFL Europe from 1998-2006 before joining the 49ers, spending one season as head coach of the Rhein Fire. He coached in colleges and high schools before that, including an early stint in his career in the 1990s at Charleston Southern in which he was delivering newspapers for The Post and Courier, serving as a night janitor at an insurance agency, and cutting firewood to make ends meet, according to his 49ers bio. He has paid his dues to get to this point. Tomsula isnt a household name among NFL fans but that will change. He comes into a really difficult situation, taking over for the very successful Harbaugh. Harbaugh was 44-19-1 in four seasons including three trips to the NFC championship game and one trip to the Super Bowl. Tomsula has a lot to live up to, but the 49ers know him well, and obviously think hes up to it. Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota has announced today that he is going to enter the 2015 NFL Draft. The following information is from an article from Yahoo Sports: Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota will forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL draft, according to a tweet by the university. Oregon Football: Mahalo Marcus. Mariota Headed to Draft Mariota, the Heisman Trophy winner, said following his team’s loss in the national championship, that he would take a couple days to speak with his family before making a final decision. My four years at the University of Oregon have been an awesome experience, Mariota said in a statement. I cannot thank coach Kelly, coach Helfrich, coach Frost, the rest of the Oregon coaches and the support staff enough for molding me as a person, player and student-athlete. The support I received from the University, the city of Eugene and Duck fans has been tremendous. I will always remember the great times and support I received. Once a Duck always a Duck. I will miss being with my teammates. Being a part of this team was something special that I will always treasure. Mariota, who has already completed his degree, was named AP Player of the Year and the Pac-12s Offensive Player of the Year. He set conference records for most touchdowns in a single season with 58, which included 42 passing touchdowns, 15 rushing and a touchdown catch. He owns the Pac-12 record for 134 career touchdowns and threw at least one touchdown pass in every game of his career, including two during the national championship game. Hes one of four quarterbacks in FBS history to pass for more than 10,000 yards and run for more than 2,000 in his career. He rushed for at least 700 yards in every season. He became the first player in FBS history to finish a season with a plus-50 ratio of touchdowns (58) to turnovers (seven). According to most pundits, Mariota is slated to be a high first-round draft pick and either the first or second quarterback taken. This is a family. Im truly grateful for all of them. And everything that weve accomplished this season, it says a lot about these guys, Mariota following the national championship on Monday. I feel truly blessed. According to reports, Atlanta Braves catcher Evan Gattis to the Houston Astros for three prospects. The following information is from an article from Yahoo Sports: The destruction of the Atlanta Braves as we knew them in 2014 continued Wednesday, as they traded slugger Evan Gattis to the Houston Astros in exchange for three prospects, two of whom ranked among Houstons top 10. The deal was first reported as done by David OBrien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, with Joel Sherman of the New York Post first to report the haul of prospects going back to the Astros. Thats Mike Foltynewicz, Rio Ruiz and Andrew Thurman. Foltynewicz, a right-handed pitcher, ranks No. 3 in the Astros farm system, per Baseball America, and Ruiz, a third baseman, is No. 8. Gattis right-handed bat is exciting — he walloped 43 homers the past two seasons — and should play well with Minute Maid Parks short porch in left field. But the deal left some analysts thinking the Astros gave up too much. Foltynewicz, specifically, has an electric arm. However, he wasnt stellar in 2014, with a 5.08 ERA in Triple-A and a 5.30 ERA with the Astros in 16 relief appearances. Still, Gattis bat added to the Astros lineup should be potent. They already have Chris Carter, who hit 37 homers a year ago and George Springer, who hit 20 in 78 games. The Astros will continue to worry about strikeouts. They had the second highest strikeout total in the league last year, and adding Gattis doesnt figure to help. While he was a catcher last year in Atlanta, Gattis but is probably best suited elsewhere defensively. He figures to play left field (Atlanta was likely to move him there too), and occasionally DH, though Carter is No. 1 on the depth chart there. Gattis, 28, comes with four seasons of team control for the Astros, certainly a factor that helped them give up three prospects. The Braves, meanwhile, have now traded Gattis, Jason Heyward and Justin Upton this offseason. Thats three of their four most valuable players, according to Fangraphs WAR calculation. Its also just more than half of their 123 team homers from 2014 — as Gattis, Heyward and Upton hit 62 homers combined. The move continues to push the narrative that the Braves are rebuilding now and hoping to put a winner on the field when their new stadium opens in 2017. Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers missed practice today as he continues to nurse and monitor his calf injury. The injury though will not keep Rodgers out of the NFC Championship Game on Sunday as the Packers take on the Seahawks in Seattle. Funny enough, Rodgers was the only Packer to miss practice today.
