Tomorrow evening at 6PM we will host a community kickoff event to completely renovate a home for a service-connected disabled veteran. Here is his very touching story: My name is Dan Flanigan. I was born in Mt. Vernon, NY on December 24th, 1947 and spent the first 20 years of my life growing up in Yonkers, NY. In April, 1968 I was drafted into the United States Army and because an infantry solider. I severed with the 9th infantry division in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. On the morning of May 9, 1969 we were making our way through the jungle back to the base camp and we were ambushed by the Vietcong. I suffered severe head trauma as the result of a hand grenade that exploded beside me, spraying a lot of shrapnel in my head. I was sent home. When I got out, I spent a lot of time in and out of Montrose Veterans Hospital. I had developed a high anxiety level, and had trouble sleeping and a lot of nightmares, which I still do to this day, although not as often. This house I live in was left to me by my parents who died in 1999. It needs a lot of repairs, which I can’t afford. I’m struggling to make ends meet and my physical health is deteriorating with a severe spinal condition and arthritis in my left hip. The VA replaced my right hip three years ago. I currently work at Hannaford’s Supermarket in Pawling and I was named the employee of the month in February. Someone was nice enough to make Purple Heart Homes aware of me, and I hope they can help. I thank God for sparing my life in Vietnam and am proud to have served my country to this day. Private Daniel P. Flanigan, Pawling, NY
