Tomorrow is the sixty-seventh anniversary of Mme Nellis debut at the New York City Opera, as Santuzza in Cavalleria rusticana, conducted by the late Julius Rudel. Interestingly, she apparently sang under an assumed name, perhaps because the very next month, the prima donna was to sing Desdemona, in Otello, under the bâton of Toscanini, which propelled her into the front rank of sopranos. She returned to the City Opera, as Herva Nelli, in 1951 and 1952, and sang in Cavalleria again, Aïda, and Andrea Chénier (directed by the famous Komisarjevsky, former head of the Bolshoi Opera, whose father was a friend of Tchaikovsky).
