Tonight I attended the Anne Arundel County Council meeting and was on the front row to history. Councilman Pete Smith embraced Councilman Daryl Jones after announcing that he was resigning the District One seat that he had been appointed to. His resignation came as a result of a ruling by a retired circuit judge and Maryland Court of Appeals that the legislation that the County Council passed was invalidated. As Councilman Smith and Councilman Jones embraced the audience gave them a standing ovation . These two black men represented at that moment the unity that we often see manifested in the photo of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X smiling at one another. Two African American males who understood that the cause they represent is greater than any one person. Tonight, Councilman Smith and Councilman Jones made us proud. I doubt that the main stream media will understand the significance of their embrace. Suffice it to say that it was not lost on the African Americans who attended this historic meeting.
