Tonight, sunset will occur at 4:47 PM (Minneapolis time). From that time to about 6 PM the planets Venus and Mercury will be visible just above the setting Sun. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and so is rarely visible from the Earth. The few times that Mercury is not lost in the Suns glare occur only near sunrise or sunset. The times that both Venus and Mercury happen to be on the same side of the Sun just at the moment that some spot on Earth happens to be experiencing the onset or departure of night are even rarer still. As an added attraction, Mars will be high in the sky this evening. And on the southwest horizon, opposite the sunset, the Moon will coincidentally be rising at practically the same time that the Sun is setting. If you are fortunate to have a clear horizon to both the SW and NE directions, you may be lucky enough to spot the very top of the Moons disc peer above the edge of the Earth before the Sun sinks below it. I hope you have a few moments today to appreciate the celestial features of the sky as afternoon slips into evening today.
