Tonya Britton - This morning, a comment by a stranger on a friends page showed up on my news thread. The post read simply, RIP, Dan, well miss you. Alarmed, I jumped over to the thread and asked, What do you mean, RIP, Dan???? After some angst-riddled follow-up, including a lengthy phone conversation with the person, now no-longer-a-stranger, I learned that my dear, sweet friend, a young man of only 33, died this morning in a roll-over. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car, killed instantly. The comment by the stranger was preceded on my thread by the article below posted by another friend in another state. The article expounds on how the world of social media creates misleading relationships, shallow interactions, and so on. I suppose in some cases, that may be true; however, Ive had quite a different experience with social media. This most recent situation, is in fact, the second time that Ive learned about a friends death through the posting and follow up of a virtual stranger, someone who Ive never met, but who also loved my friend and who was kind and thoughtful enough to reach out to me to share in mutual grief and celebration. Thanks to social media, there have been so many other shared experiences with people that Ive known for years as well as people that Ive never met, but who I cannot imagine not having in my life. I no longer differentiate between my real world and my FB or social media world. It doesnt matter to me how someone has come into my life, just that they have somehow, by grace and fate, managed to find their way here and for that, Im so very grateful. Ill write more about Danny - once Im able to sew my heart back together Suzette Sommer--- Tonya, sorry about your loss of a friend... I had the same reaction to this article - really depends on who your friends are ... I have seen much transparency through many trials of various kinds vs posturing and trying only to impress - Ive met some very soulful and thoughtful people via FB.
