Top honour for Shaikh Nasser HIS Majesty King Hamads Representative for Charity Work and Youth Affairs, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) president Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa yesterday became the first Arab personality to receive the Highest Contribution Award from ICHPER.SD since it was founded in 1958. International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (ICHPER.SD) honoured Shaikh Nasser in recognition of his continued support to sport development in Bahrain. He was also presented with the Royal Night award from the International Military Sports Council (CISM) president Lieutenant Colonel Abdulhakim Al Shino. The awards were presented to Shaikh Nasser at a closing ceremony as the curtain came down on 56th ICHPER.SD Anniversary World Congress and Exposition yesterday. The conference was organised by the BOC in partnership with ICHPER.SD and Bahrain University. The focus on the third and final day of the congress was Privatisation of Sports Club, presented by sports organisation Kleinamann Wangs chief executive Anter Isaac. Kleinamann Wang provides expert advice to sporting organisations on strategy and operational efficiency, league and club development, sports governance and regulatory systems, as well as stadia and facilities development. Mr Isaac highlighted the definition of privatisation, its benefits, risks and drawbacks, how to mitigate risks and drawbacks, the governments role in privatisation, popular forms of private ownership of clubs and main considerations before privatising clubs. Privatisation involves a shift from traditional ownership models for sporting clubs, from member-based or government-controlled entities established for social and sporting enrichment into entities focused on commercial objectives and brand development through sporting success, he said. Privatisation Increasing costs of operational, facilities and athlete pay, in addition to the increased revenue from commercial activities are some of the factors which have instigated privatisation in sport and sports clubs. He used some of the worlds most renowned and prominent clubs as examples, like English Club Manchester United, which was established in 1878 by local railway workers to play football against workers in other departments. Now they are wholly privatised and a publicly-listed club. Mr Isaac also dwelt on reasons for private entities to invest in sports clubs, forms of private ownership in clubs, main benefits of privatisation and goals of the private owners of the clubs. More than 60 oral presentations covering various sports-related topics also took place. ICHPER president Dr Adel El Nashar and other senior officials were present. At the closing ceremony, Shaikh Nasser honoured a number of figures for their contributions and efforts. They were Kefah Al Daen of the Sports Medicine Centre, Nabeel Taha of the Sports Training and Development Section, Bahrain Universitys Dr Mona Al Ansari, Education Ministry Under-Secretary Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and ICHPER.SD president Dr Adel El Nashar.
