Training on drainage, sanitation & solid waste management ends Africa » Gambia Monday, August 12, 2013 The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) recently concluded three-day training on drainage, sanitation and solid waste management. The training was meant for hotspot community members and leaders in project operational activities in Bansang, Upper Fulladu west, Central River Region (CRR) south. The project is EU/Gambia government Drainage, Sanitation and Waste Management project. Speaking on behalf of the governor of CRR, the deputy governor, Alhaji Malang Saibo Camara spoke extensively on the importance of the training, noting that if hotspot community members are capacitated on drainage, sanitation and solid waste management, it will go a long way towards stopping people dumping into the drainage system. Camara said solid wastes management in the Gambia have increased in size and complexity and pose serious environmental problems, pointing out that people are dumping wastes in the streets or any available open space. He posited that these waste dumps, apart from being unsightly, are serious health and environmental hazards. The regional disaster coordinator, Bubacarr Fofana asserted that most of the drainage systems are used as dumpsites for waste which have caused blockage. According to him, Bansang is a hotspot area and thus urged the community to protect the drainage system in order to avoid flood. He reiterated that solid wastes are an important source of air pollution, surface and ground water contamination. Fofana called on the participants to disseminate the information to those who do not have the chance to attend the training so that they can achieve the objective. Author: Daily Observer
