Troop F is saddened to say on December 17, 2014, Retired LSP K-9 Andy was laid to rest by Lt. John Peters. Andy was acquired by LSP in 2003. During his career with LSP, three troopers had the honor of being his handler. Andy was unique. The mix of Boxer and Belgian Malinois provided a manageable dog with excellent drive. He was often laughed at because of his appearance, but his performance usually silenced the non-believers... and criminals. Andy won his first NPCA K-9 Competition in Beaumont, Texas. He would place in the top half in subsequent competitions throughout his career. Andy was involved in seizures totaling more than 6,000 lbs of marijuana, 250 lbs of cocaine and $500,000 in US Currency. Under the watchful eye of a federal judge, Andy checked a line of parcels and located vacuum sealed marijuana blocks, sunken in sealed jars of food. He was a favorite for several hundred area school children. His unassuming appearance and demeanor helped several children overcome their fear of dogs. Generally speaking, police dogs are not treated as pets. They are tools and to keep the dog focused on work, they cannot be treated as pets. Work has to be their only fun. The department graciously retired Andy to me. In his final years, he was finally treated as a pet, became an even bigger part of our family and was spoiled as a reward to him for his service to the department. I am thankful to the department for allowing me the opportunity to handle Andy and grateful I was with him at the end.
