Tropical Storm Kajiki/Bagyong Basyang [Update #4(A) 01/31/14 23:00 PHT] Its Friday Evening and Tropical Storm Kajiki / Basyang is making landfall in Northern Mindanao and Southern Visayas. Already showers are being reported in Eastern Visayas and Mindanao and wind gust could still reach 80kph. This is truly an unwelcomed event for those still in temporary shelters following Typhoon Haiyan. Furthermore finding wind reports in the area where this storm is making landfall is rather challenging due to many of the connections and weather stations are down after Haiyan. The track of Kajiki is actually closely similar to that of Haiyan. Bringing heavy rainfall to areas that are still recovering from that monster of a storm. Key different is that this one is much weaker. Another Key difference is the lack of storm surge. Unlike Haiyan this storm will not be pushing a wall of water with it. It is far to weak. Still coastal flooding could be expected but nothing that will raise water levels off the normal high tide level. Still though as of writing this update the city of Cebu has reported power outages, some roofs being blown and gusty winds along with heavy rainfall. This is expected to last through the overnight hours in to Saturday late morning. Best recommendation is to ride this storm out and don’t leave your home until it passes if you are being impacted. PAGASA continues to warn on the threat of floods and landslides through Saturday afternoon stating .”Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signal #2 and #1 are alerted against possible flash floods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas under signal #2 are alerted against storm surges. You can find if you are in any of these conditions by clicking this link (pagasa.dost.gov.ph/wb/tc_up.html). People in these areas under threat should continue to stay alert and avoid taking any un-needed risks. Key thing to remember, if it looks dangerous it probably is. Best thing to do with this storm if you are in any impacted areas is wait for it to pass and be alert. As of writing this update the city of Cebu was reporting heavy rains. This is expected to last through the overnight hours in to Saturday late morning. Meanwhile south of the storms center dry air inflow continues to wrap in to the system. Reports from Davao in southern Mindanao have relayed cloudy skies all day but very little in the form of precipitation.
