True this: My mother was raised in Inwood from her birth in 1938. Her Wanser ancestors had been, shall we say, immersed in the activities of the Ku Klux Klan - nothing to brag about there. When she enrolled in school her first friend was Ella Mae. She was so obsessed with her friend that she asked for a doll just like Ella Mae for Christmas. She received her gift. A brown skinned doll that she named Ella Mae. There is a photo somewhere of her and Ella Mae. My mom always used the word colored (ask Phil Johnson) but it was never with malice it was more of a child-like ignorance. So my point is, it begins with our children.
