Twenty-six years ago today, as a new 727 first officer, I had a pterygium removed from the inside corner of my right eye, or was the left?...cant remember. Before the procedure, the nurse could not get the IV in my hand vein, so I went in without the benefit of being high! Then, I remember the pain as meds wore off during the procedure; the surgeon asked, Am I hurting you? Duh. You have sharp stuff in my eye and Im wincing....? Yes, youre hurting me! I could see the gold glint of his instruments, and had the distinct feeling of being a medieval knight run through with a lance. The post op pain kicked in while I waited at Osco for a script, and increased all day after the surgery. Camie, David and I went to Niagara Falls later that week and I left the bottle of snake oil I was to instill in my eye for pain in the B&B fridge. I cant find my glasses, but I can remember that week with clarity. Ive had a few procedures since - shoulder surgery, root canals, two subsequent eye surgeries - but nothing ever hurt like that.
