Two things. 1) Ive been watching a lot of DVD commentaries, and Ive noticed two annoying trends: 1a - Using the word again as a transition when the speaker isnt referencing something previously said. As in, Again, David Boreanaz was an incredibly lucky find in casting, even though David Boreanaz talent as an actor or his journey through the casting process are only now being mentioned as this sentence is uttered. The worst abuser of this nonsense? Larry Charles. Hes a great writer and actually gives better insight into SEINFELD episodes than anyone else from its writers room, but that long-haired pinko can barely get through a sentence without saying again twice. The quizzical misuse of this word is so widespread, its obviously some kind of entertainment industry meme. Im surprised I never noticed it during my decade in LA. It certainly never rang any bells like, Well put a pin in that, or, Now bend over and spread em, kid. 1b - If youre doing a commentary on a piece of cinema, can you please NEVER NOT ONCE remark about how you cant possibly understand why anyone would listen to a DVD commentary or about how only three people are going to hear the commentary or - by far my least favorite - about how anyone listening to a commentary needs to get a life? First of all, cinema is my life. And its your life too, or you wouldnt be recording your audible memoirs about a television show you created. I get that youre trying to be self-effacing, to act like youre not special. BUT YOU ARE. You get to make movies and/or television. You are incredibly special, or blessed if you prefer that distinction. If Im listening to your commentary - a thing I dont often do - its because you made an incredibly remarkable and ORIGINAL piece of cinema. Can you please not be UNORIGINAL and regurgitate the same line I hear on every single commentary about how you cant understand why someone would want insight on a piece of art from that piece of arts creator? 2) I love YouTube. Every time I think of something Ive always wanted to see but never had the opportunity, I just punch some keywords into Google, and the next thing I know, Im watching Steve McQueen spar with Peter Lorre.
