UNOGeneva 2014 3rd June: The occasion is the annual commemoration of the International Blue Helmets Day (29 May) and rememberance of the 3,200+ blue helmets killed on active service during blue helmet peacekeeping missions since the inception of United Nations blue helmets peace.keeping missions in 1948. It is to underscore the 100+ blue helmets killed every year, and fatality spike between 2004 to date, wth the exception of 2007: un.org/en/peacekeeping/fatalities/documents/stats_1.pdf Look at left-hand side column for blue helmet fatality. Also, on this day, Paul Copeland (Order of Australia Merit) OAM and (Justice of the Peace) JP pleaded the case on behalf of blue helmets as political firefighters and veterans on the par with those in armed and post-conflict lethal scenarios and not as political dustmen with secondary and incidental roles. This day is also for former blue berets from Australia, Burundi, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Ghana, Ireland. Kenya, Qatar, Russia, Senegal, Sweden, Tchad and Ukraine with their respective AISP representation to mingle together outside the respective national authority context and with United Nations officials; as well as to recognise the mutual efforts to improve perceptions and realities facing former blue helmets, for example, Paul Copeland was awarded the Russian Reserve Officer chevalier medal, the Czech and Polish meritious equivalent after his keynote speech on the veteran status and rights of former blue helmets.
