UPND Gives Up on Police Opposition United Party for National Development secretary general Kunchunga Simusamba says after writing to the Zambia Police Force his party had given up on seeking the police’s permission to hold demonstrations. But Home Affairs Public Relations officer Moses Suwali says the government would not allow the opposition party to hold demonstrations without a police permit. Simusamba said the UPND had been very eager to follow the law and request the police to help them but the men in uniform had not been helpful. “We have written on more than 15 occasions to the police to allow us to assemble. We have even appealed to the Minister and obtained court orders to compel the police to allow us meet but they have continued to refuse,” he said. “From now on, we’ll disregard the police and march.” And Simusamba has said Patriotic Frong Secretary General Wynter Kabimba was not being sincere on the controversial matter involving acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda whose continued stay in office has been challenged by opposition political parties and the civil society. “Kabimba is a known public liar. The select committee is a sitting of parliament. The minister of justice knows that there was no report to make because there was no candidate,” he said. “If you read the constitution, it is very clear. If the name is rejected it goes back to the president and he suggests another one. Simusamba added: “The issue of the Acting Chief Justice is serious. This government is less than two years old but it seems they have specialized in breaching the constitution. We just don’t have enough numbers to impeach the president in parliament.” He said the recent debate about the health of President Michael Sata was a sign that he was not well. “Fighting in PF shows something is wrong and the President is not alright,” said Simusamba. zambiareports/2013/08/26/upnd-gives-up-on-police/
