URGENT ATTENTION TO: News Editor, Sports Editors & Reporters ANC YOUTH LEAGUE STATEMENT ON SPORTS TRANSFORMATION As a champion of youth aspirations and interests, the African National Congress Youth League regards sports as a cornerstone of social cohesion and youth development. This is because, amongst other things, an entrenched culture of sporting activities is of strategic value in the national battle against substance abuse and criminal activities. Given the advances made at the professional level, sport provides substantial economic incentives and therefore fits in well with our programme for youth development and economic freedom in our lifetime. For us to achieve the desired social and economic outcomes through sports, we need to cultivate a culture of excellence that does not tolerate mediocrity. It is in this context that we are extremely concerned about the evident weaknesses in our development structures, particularly in such a big sporting code like soccer. The fact that we have been failing to qualify for any major international tournament, from AFCON to the FIFA World Cup, expresses a deep seated crisis with the development structures and institutions of leadership responsible for soccer in SA. In this regard, it is in the interest of the whole country for the South African Football Association to clean up its house and provide solid leadership in soccer. As they go to their elective congress, we call on them to give us a united leadership with a solid vision and indeed with capacity to bring that vision to life. Moreover, we call on that elective congress to be sensitive to the national agenda of gender transformation. We raise this because as it stands, the current National Executive Committee of SAFA has only two females out of 40 members. This situation is unacceptable and undermines our collective drive as a nation towards the transformation of all our institutions to be gender representatives. It is about time that we see the integration of former soccer players, both male and female, into leadership structures of the sport. Thus, we call on this coming elective congress to elect a fair number of women and former players into the NEC. In our 24th National congress we called for “…the establishment and implementation of sports facilities through the diversion of funding from the Municipal Infrastructure Grant in the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the Department of Human Settlements to the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture.” Therefore coming out of that meeting, we call on SAFA to give us a leadership collective that will appropriately and effectively utilize the WORLD CUP LEGACY FUND and other funds from the State through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for investment in sporting infrastructure, school sports and other development structures. As part of a systematic development strategy, they must roll-out plans to have our national youth teams like the under 23, under 20 etc playing frequently for our young stars to gain international exposure and competitive advantage that will add value to Bafana Bafana in future. On RUGBY We understand that an official nomination process in Rugby is to be opened in November 2013. As leaders of young people who participate in all sorts of sport codes including rugby – we will take an active and keen interest on the processes leading to the SARU elective conference. Indeed we are still firm on our belief that the sport of Rugby is slow on transforming and that the inclusion of black people in the sport is still low. We call on SARU to come out of their elective meeting with a clear strategy of developing rugby in rural areas and townships more radically than we have witnessed so far. They must have a direct hand in the establishment and strengthening of school rugby tournaments, not only in metropolitan regions but more so in black communities in townships and rural areas. We have met with Transformation Rugby Coalition and we will soon be asking a meeting with SARU to discuss the development of Rugby in townships and rural areas. We also support efforts to clean up administration at Athletics SA following an embarrassing period of leadership ineptitude and resource squandering.
