Ulrich Weigert is a truly inspirational person. And he is 100 - TopicsExpress

Ulrich Weigert is a truly inspirational person. And he is 100 years old! I had coffee with Ulrich this afternoon and we chatted about the war, his family and what he his up to now (very busy painting, reading, and walking). Ulrich was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1914 to a Jewish father and a German mother. In 1939 Ulrichs parents sent their children away to Britain and South Africa to escape the persecution from the Nazi government. Ulrichs parents stayed in Germany forsaking their own peace and security because they didnt want to be a burden to anyone else. Ulrichs Grandmother was taken by the Nazis to a concentration camp when she was 86 years old and she died shortly after from dysentery. Ulrichs maternal uncle and his wife both committed suicide so they could escape the fate of Auschwitz. Some of Ulrichs inspirational quotes War is a ghastly man made disaster and we havent learnt from the past. Ulrich believes that barbed wire, cigarettes, and the atomic bomb are the worst three inventions. Words are the strength and the weakness of the human race. They can allow us to label people as the enemy. Ulrich is wise, humble and delightful and if only people in power would listen to people who have lived through persecution. In 2015 John Slater and I will hopefully be hosting a public event an audience with Ulrich Weigert in Sheffield.
