Understanding God’s Rest “Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” ~ Genesis 2:1-3 The Bible says that for six days God created the world, and that He rested on the seventh day. You and I might assume that God “rested” on the seventh day because He was tired or exhausted from all the work He’d done, but that’s entirely not the case. God rested from His work because He was finished! Now, that doesn’t mean that He became idle, passive or indifferent on the seventh day. He didn’t stop caring. But what “resting” means is that He’d finished all the work He wanted to do—there was nothing more to add to what He had already done! It is like a lawyer in a courtroom saying, “I rest my case.” He says that not because he is tired or wants to be idle, but simply because he has finished all that he set out to do. Here’s the thing: Man was created at the very end of the sixth day, meaning the first full day of man’s existence was on the Sabbath. Man was made to live, move and have his being embraced within “the rest of God”! God has made and called you to increase, conquer and have dominion throughresting in Him. That means to place your complete dependence on Him and Him alone. Succeeding in life and having victory over the enemy comes through resting—through faith—in what Christ has done for you, and what God promises through His Word! Prayer for the day: Thank God you don’t have to strive through life in your own strength, but can have victory through resting on God’s infallible promises!
