Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has cleared 8 coal thermal plants in Andhra which will emit 68 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, requiring 27,000 square kilometres of forests to sequester them. In addition the ministry has cleared thermal plants in five coastal districts which when operational, will burn 102 million tonnes of coal/year, emitting 130 million tonnes of CO2 and will suck about 6 billion litres of seawater each day and discharge a major fraction of the same as hot and polluted water back into the sea.
