Upshur county and Buckhannon are great places to live. We have a great city and county government. We have next to no crime. We have a great school system. We have low taxes. We have a great little college with students that never cause the town much trouble. There are not a mountain of jobs that pay above the poverty level here but its been that way for many years and it reflects the average of our state in general. On the other hand if you want to work , its only a 40 minute drive to many good paying jobs. Buckhannon is what it is. Its never going to be a metropolis of industry or high tech companies because we are not set up for that and we dont offer a work force for those companies. It is a great retirement community and if you dont mind raising children in that environment then Buckhannon is for you. As far as downtown, Main street started changing in the late 70s and has been changing every since. There will never be GC Murphys, HP, Western Auto, National Auto and the like. Those kind of things have been replaced by things like Amazon. I do think that we should have things on Main Street to promote tourism and be the show piece for Buckhannon. We have some really nice businesses on Main St. now and plenty of room for more. No, we dont need more big box stores and strip malls when there is still plenty of room downtown to accommodate many more stores. You cant have all the big city stuff without the population to support it. If the population ever starts up then all those big city things will start to filter in and with that will come all the bad things too. So you cant have it both ways and I for one dont see any reason to fix something thats not broke. city-data/city/Buckhannon-West-Virginia.html
