Use of shells to make wampum beads in the northeast goes back at least 4,000 years. Elizabeth James-Perry is one of the premier artists in the U.S. making traditional wampum items. She digs up shells, hand cuts shells into beads (with some power assist), polishes the beads by hand, and uses native-tanned leather to form straps. Using her vast knowledge of Wampanoag history, she creates genuine wampum jewelry that is beyond compare.
