VARANASI: The campus of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) turned hot on Tuesday when warpath adopted by students demanding withdrawal of the hike made in fee structure led to unruly scenes at many offices, main gate and also vice-chancellors lodge. The high drama continued till late in the evening as students were not ready to call off the stir. The pressure built by students compelled the university administration to stop realizing the increased amount of fee till further decision of the academic council. According to university spokesman RP Singh, in June 2013, the academic council had taken the decision to make nominal hike in the fee of all courses in order to generate own resources for on-going development works. The consent of all the heads of departments, deans of faculties and directors of institutes had been taken before implementing the decision. But due to one reason or the other, the revised fee structure was not introduced when the first semester of 2013-14 academic session started. When the second semester started after winter vacation, the students were asked to pay increased fee and also to deposit the hiked amount of the fee of first semester. The move of university backfired. The students from almost all the departments, faculties and institutes went on rampage after reaching the campus on Tuesday. The series of agitations started from the office of dean of students, where a group of over 500 students started a sit-in in the morning. The agitation spread on other parts of campus. A group set the effigy of vice-chancellor on fire while another reached the VC lodge and started staging sit-in and demonstration. In the meantime, a group of over 500 students, including girls, reached the central office where they forced the employees at fee counters to stop the works. Some other groups continued carrying out processions in different parts of the campus while one group reached the main gate and locked it. They indulged in demonstration and sloganeering. When chief proctor AK Joshi along with security personnel of proctorial board reached the main gate, an altercation ensued. Some policemen were also present there. During the chaotic scene, some persons waived sticks after which students started running dispersing. However, the proctorial board personnel as well as police denied to have charged-cane. But within few minutes, the students returned there and indulged in violent activities like damaging the motorcycle, bicycles standing there. One group also captured the proctorial boards outpost near main gate. This mob of students also disrupted an ambulance when it was heading towards SSL Hospital on the campus. The day high drama compelled the BHU administration to tackle the matter sensitively. Singh told TOI that the university administration had decided to stop realizing hiked fee. The issue would be put before the academic council again to take a decision. The university would act as per the decision of council. However, no official could make it clear that when academic council will hold its meeting. Post a comment
