**VIC** Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds for people in the North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts Issued at 9:52 pm EDT on Wednesday 16 October 2013. Weather Situation A trough of low pressure has reached Central Victoria and will continue to push eastwards overnight, followed by a cold front that will rapidly cross southern Victoria early Thursday. An associated deep low pressure system will pass south of Tasmania on Thursday. Damaging winds around 60 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are forecast for coastal parts of the South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts on Thursday, mainly in association with heavy showers or thunderstorms. Elevated parts of the Northeast, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts above 1000 metres can expect winds reaching 70 to 90 km/h during tonight and Thursday morning with peak gusts on exposed Alpine peaks to 130 km/h. The Severe Weather Warning for parts of the North Central forecast district has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary. Highest wind gusts today are Mount Hotham 126km/h and Mt Buller 102 km/h. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. Keep clear of fallen power lines. Dont drive, ride or walk through flood water. Keep clear of creeks and storm drains. Beware of fallen trees or debris on the road. For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next warning will be issued by 5:00 am EDT Thursday.
