VOLUNTEER CENTER INVITES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 9th annual MLK DAY CHALLENGE Volunteer Activities and Opportunities Highlight Commemoration of Martin Luther King Day Even the smallest community service deeds can help make a difference, and Burlington County residents of all ages are being provided that opportunity through the “9th Annual MLK Day Challenge” sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Burlington County. From 11 AM to 3 PM on Monday, January 19th -- Martin Luther King Day – a menu of volunteer activities and opportunities will be offered at the Main Branch of Burlington County Library, 5 Pioneer Boulevard, Westampton. The library is cosponsoring the event. “The theme of making MLK Day ‘A Day On, Not a Day Off’ resonates across the country,” said Volunteer Center President Kim Mattson. “Our MLK Day Challenge gives our residents, including young children, an opportunity to transform the holiday into a day of community service.” The “simplest gesture can help make a difference,” added Mattson. She noted that this would once again provide residents an opportunity to donate much needed items to a local food bank that serves county residents in need, as well as to the county animal shelter. Details are as follows • Food Collection for the Twin Oaks Food Pantry – Mount Holly. Food donations may include peanut butter and jelly, breakfast items such as oatmeal and cereal, kid friendly snacks such as granola bars, canned meat/fish, microwaveable foods such as Easy Mac or Chef Boyardee, and canned fruits and vegetables. • Collection for the Burlington County Animal Shelter. Frontline, canned dog food, HE laundry detergent, dry dog food, towels, blankets, sheets, dog treats, pillow cases, wash rags, dog toys (especially plastic/rubber), antibacterial hand soap/hand sanitizer, canned cat food, paper towels, dry cat food, brooms, scrub brushes, cat toys (plastic), fabric softener sheets, cat litter (non-clumping), bleach and plug in room freshener. Note: All collected/donated items to be dropped-off at the Burlington County Library Main Branch - Pioneer Blvd., Westampton, NJ - 11am - 3 pm, Monday - January 19th. An activity popular with young children, Greeting Card Making, will also be offered, with Burlington County Library providing supplies for participants to make greeting cards for residents in nursing care facilities. “This is a great way to brighten the day, and the room, of our more fragile neighbors,” said Mattson. Visitors can also view the “We the Dreamers” exhibit in honor of Martin Luther King, featuring works by artist Elizabeth Kirby (on display beginning January 17th), and visit the Volunteer Center’s information table to learn more about year-round community service opportunities.
