Vanuatu PM highlights support for USP The Prime Minister of Vanuatu, His Excellency Honourable Joe Natuman, highlighted his government’s continued support towards The University of the South Pacific (USP). Hon Natuman, who is also an alumnus of USP, said the University played a key role in the development of human resource capacity in the region. “USP is very important. I came to this University to complete my degree in the 1970s and graduated in 1978, and most of the leaders in Vanuatu and Pacific are USP graduates,” he said. “We are appreciative from what the University has done for us. For Vanuatu it is very important because human resources development is the top priority for the country and USP is doing all it can to assist us to develop our human resource capacity in Vanuatu,” Hon Natuman said. The Vice-Chancellor and President of USP Professor Rajesh Chandra welcomed Hon Natuman to the University saying the University was pleased by the Prime Minister’s visit. “I think the visit from the Prime Minister of Vanuatu was really an important visit. This was a good opportunity for us to brief the Prime Minister about the University’s work here and across the region and also to talk about the activities in Vanuatu and especially the new developments taking place at Emalus Campus and other Centres,” Professor Chandra said. He said it was very encouraging to hear the Prime Minister reiterate the very strong support of Vanuatu for USP. “He (Hon Natuman) spoke highly of the progress the University is making and we both agreed that there is a very bring future not only for USP but also for our operations in Vanuatu,” he said. Professor Chandra said one of the things that was discussed was the increasing provision of programmes in Vanuatu in the French Language. “Half the population there speak French and the University has now started a major programme to translate the most important programmes in French”. “We also talked about the recognition that has been given to the LLB programme by the Law Council in Australia and the Prime Minister was very pleased with that. Both the Prime Minister and I have seen the law programme develop from the very early planning stages to what is now a very successful law school,” Professor Chandra said.
