Voice on the other end of the phone, calling from Nashville in 1991: Hi, Randy! This is Nancy Jones, George Jones wife. Yall know were fixin to come up your way to play Lulus and I was wondering if youd like to do a phone interview with George. WHAH???? I had been trying to get an interview with George Jones - The Possum for almost a decade, only to be told many times George doesnt do interviews. I had seen him in concert quite a few times when he DID show. And now, this opportunity just seemed to fall in my lap. We did do the phone interview (more on that some other time), but while I had Nancy on the phone, I told her I knew Georges concert in Kitchener, Ont., would fall right on his 60th birthday. I asked her if it would be OK to present him with a birthday cake backstage, either before or after the show. She said, Sure, well work out the details that day. Fast forward to the night of the show--George Jones 60th birthday. I show Nancy the cake backstage and she gave me these instructions: Present it to him on stage. His fourth song is Bartenders Blues. Just take the wireless mic and surprise him, but try to keep it brief. I did just that. The place was sold-out and at the end of the song, I took the mic, walked out on stage with some helpers carrying the cake, and proceeded to wish The Possum a very happy 60th birthday. I then led the audience into the song Happy Birthday and then quickly left the stage. I still cant believe I got to sing Happy Birthday to George Jones on this 60th birthday on stage at Lulus Roadhouse in front of over 2500 people--and no one left! A few weeks later, I received a nice thank-you letter in the mail from George. I wasnt expecting that, either. Today would have been Georges 83rd birthday. Im so fortunate to have been able to participate in one of them. God bless his memory and God bless Nancy Jones.
