Ratanpori, who had vowed to raise his voice for getting justice to Afzal Guru, Maqbool Bhat and Syed Ali Shah Geelani, lost to Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Mohammad Khalil Bandit by 1032 votes. Bandit, who retained Pulwama seat for third consecutive term, polled 11631 votes while Ratanpori got 10599 votes out of total 30168 votes polled in the constituency. Noted broadcaster turned journalist, Ratanpori, who joined National Conference in 2008, has fought the elections two times without success. Contesting the state assembly elections from Pulwama on NC ticket in 2008, he ended fourth with 2312 votes. Since 2009 he has represented the assembly segment in Rajya Sabha. He has been a controversial politician for making statements which dont fall in line with the traditional policy of National conference. He created a stir when he met with pro-Pakistan Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani at his New Delhi Residence and described him as the tallest leader of contemporary Kashmir. Prior to the assembly elections, he was seen on Indian televisions speaking against house detention of Syed Ali Shah Geelani without legal detention order and denial of fair trial to the 2001 parliament convict Afzal Guru. Khali Bandith won Pulwama constituency assembly seat in 2002 elections by defeating NC candidate Bashir Ahmad Negroo by a margin of 2600 votes. He became R&B minister with independent charge in 2006 and in 2008 he defeated independent candidate Sanaullah by more than 6000 votes. Bandith served as roads and building minister in 2006. His pro-people attitude has overshadowed his low educational qualification.
