***WARNING DISTRESSING AND GRAPHIC IMAGES*** DEATH WAS THEIR DESTINY SOONER OR LATER. Cork DAWG has always championed the plight of Irish greyhounds. We are not advocates of greyhound racing, because to us whether a dog lives or dies should not be determined by their ability to win races. Earlier this week 11 greyhounds were found dead on a transport van, they died of asphyxiation over the course of an 18 hour ferry journey from Ireland. Those of us who know and love this noble breed find it hard to think of what those 11 greyhounds must have suffered as they died a slow death. They were apparently destined for Spain, to be used to breed with Spanish galgos. Anybody who is familiar with the greyhound racing industry in Ireland will be well aware of the unfortunate fate of Irish greyhounds who are sent there for the largely unregulated hunting industry. The galgueros (greyhound hunters) are known for their maltreatment of these animals who are regularly hung from trees at the end of the season. The Galgos rescue websites and facebook pages are not for the faint hearted. The Irish greyhound racing industry is worth € 500 hundred million a year, of that massive amount only € 2 million which equates to .04% is allocated to welfare related issues. So little for these dogs whose efforts have generated massive profits for the business. The IGB is also subsidised by the government and ultimately by Irish taxpayers. Please email the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, [email protected] and the welfare officer at the Irish Greyhound Board [email protected] and ask them to please ensure no more Irish greyhounds are sent to Spain . These dogs are voiceless so please speak out on their behalf. For some people a night at the dogs is something to enjoy, remember for the dogs they are literally running for their lives
