WASHINGTON — District 308 School Board members on Monday approved the district’s 2013-14 budget, which includes an anticipated $800,000 deficit in the education fund. “We’ve cut every place we can,” said Assistant Superintendent Joe Sander. “Many school districts in Illinois are facing the same dilemma as we are. Revenue isn’t matching expenses.” The education fund portion of the budget estimates $12 million in revenue and $12.8 million in expenses. Also Monday, board members: ► Approved an intent to issue $2.8 million in working cash bonds for facilities improvements at the high school. A public hearing was scheduled for Oct. 15 and approval of issuing the bonds was scheduled for Nov. 11, both during regular monthly board meetings. Among the targeted improvements are construction of home bleachers and a press box and installation of artificial turf at Babcook Field; construction of tennis courts and a wrestling/physical education room; and adding air conditioning to 40 percent of the campus that doesn’t have it. ► Approved an agreement that establishes co-op boys and girls swimming and diving teams with East Peoria and Morton high schools. Washington would be the host school. East Peoria and Morton school boards and the Mid-Illini Conference also must approve the agreement, which needs to be sent to the Illinois High School Association for approval by Oct. 1. Costs would be divided by the number of students from each school on a team. “We’ll start with boys swimming in the winter if this is approved,” said Athletics Director Herb Knoblauch. “Our goal is to have 20 to 30 students on each team.” Washington has boys and girls swimming and diving teams. East Peoria and Morton don’t have teams. ► Approved asking district attorneys to represent the district in an assessed valuation appeal filed by the new owners of the Walgreen’s drug store at 1011 Peoria St. The Tazewell County Board of Review affirmed the assessment, and the property owners appealed. Sander said the new owners want the valuation lowered by more than $100,000. pjstar/news/x1803826831/District-308-board-approves-budget
