WE ALL STAND AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY & SUPPORT TURNING POINT FOR WOMEN AND FAMILIES Dear Friends, We are extending you a personal invitation to a very important IFTAR dinner we are hosting on Sunday, July 21, 2013 to support Turning Point for Women and Families. Founded in 2004, Turning Point for Women and Families is the first and only not-for-profit organization in New York City that addresses domestic violence in the Muslim community. In partnership with public, private, and religious institutions, Turning Point provides much needed services in the New York metropolitan area for Muslim women and children who are victims of domestic violence. It provides them with crisis intervention, shelter, food, childcare, free and confidential counseling, and legal/immigration referrals. Through support groups, youth outreach programs, and job placement services, Turning Point assists women and girls to empower themselves so they can become their own best advocates. Turning Point has also mentored a new generation of social workers to address the unique needs of the Muslim community. Since its inception, Turning Point has served over 750 Muslim women, girls, and children, most of them recent immigrants, coming from over 30 different countries. Among several other accolades, the founder of Turning Point, Robina Niaz, was recognized as a ”CNN Hero” in 2009 and was honored by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg during the 2011 National Women’s History Month for her amazing work caring for women and children affected by domestic violence in a context of cultural and religious sensitivity. In June 2013, Turning Point was awarded the Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize from Hunter College for distinguished accomplishment in the field of urban public health.
