WE DID IT!! Thank you to everyone who wrote a letter, went on the march and signed the petition. Well done and Thank You!! A letter from Rory Stewart : This is just a short note to thank everyone very much for the fantastic community support for the campaign to keep the Penrith fire engine. The real credit must go to Dawn Coates and the fire-fighters who were so focused and determined, constructive in their suggestions, and energetic. But a huge thank you also to the hundreds who joined the march and the many thousands who signed the petition or wrote individual notes. All this effort has paid off. Today we received the fantastic news that the County Council has decided to keep the engine. This is so important for our very sparsely populated area, for the M6 corridor, and for the dedicated fire-fighters themselves. And it is a real victory for popular action. A thank you also to everyone who came to my surgeries last week in Appleby and Kirkby Stephen, and in Brampton and Penrith the week before. The turn-out has been great - nearly eight hours of continuous surgeries the week before last. I will be doing extra surgeries tomorrow (Friday January 31st) at 3pm in Penriths Booths cafe and at the Alston Local Links office at 5:30pm for anyone who missed the last ones. The next fight - this week - is to get the government to commit support for Mountain Rescue. We met Minister Stephen Hammond today, and presented a petition demanding that they will again cover the VAT on Mountain Rescue equipment. Well be pressing again in parliamentary questions next week.
