WELCOME TO OPENING NIGHT! MUSIC OF DREAMS AND DRAMA BERNSTEIN AND SHOSTAKOVICH October 12 and 13, 2014 Music Director and Conductor John Morris Russell will open the orchestra’s 33rd season, “Music of Dreams and Drama,” with the works of Leonard Bernstein and Dmitri Shostakovich. Bernstein’s Candide Overture, from his “comic operetta” based on Voltaire’s satirical novella of 1759, is one of Bernstein’s most frequently performed works. In sharp contrast to the Candide Overture, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 expressing his brooding and ambivalent relationship with the Soviet regime. Stephen Lin, the engaging and imaginative Taiwanese American pianist, will play Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The concert will be held on Sunday, October 12 at 4 pm and Monday, October 13 at 8 pm in Hilton Heads First Presbyterian Church. Note this year that every concert will now include a matinee on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 pm along with the traditional Monday night concert at 8:00 pm. Maestro Russell will conduct a pre-concert chat one hour before each concert. A reception for the performers and audience will follow the Monday night concert in the church’s Gathering Space.
