Already by the same publisher, his new CD - a beautiful recital - was just released, entitled My life is an opera, including two French great arias from less-known works (La Reine de Saba by Gounod and Sigurd by Reyer). Next spring, he will perform at the Opera de Paris in two roles as rare as exciting, Rodrigue in Le Cid by Massenet and Lancelot in Le Roi Arthus by Chausson. His interest for the French operatic heritage is not new, and he is to be thanked for that: here is a new example, with this beautiful Werther from 2005. Just upon his entrance aria O Nature pleine de grâce, he is the romantic, charming and tormented hero we expect, with his warm and radiant tone. This ideal embodiment is continuing throughout the four acts, from the famous Clair de lune duet to his poignant death, through the inner tension of “Lorsque l’enfant revient” or the Ossian’s Lied. The incarnation is perfect both musically and dramatically: his appearance, poor disheveled hero after the letters’ aria by Charlotte, is just breathtaking! Werther is also resting on Charlotte’s strong shoulders – but also frail. Kate Aldrich’s performance equals that of her lover with regard to her ability to match the role, certainly in the letters’ aria precisely, so famous but being rediscovered thanks to her fervor, but also in the duets of acts II and III, very intense. Sophie, for once, is not a goose or a dumb blonde but a true temperament: Nathalie Manfrino can be trusted to appear more as a friendly confidant than a little birdbrain sister. Impeccable Marc Barrard as a stylish and anxious Albert. The two friends Johann and Schmidt are excellent […] This near perfect interpretation is magnified by the actor directing, which is calculated to the millimeter. And if the excitement reached its peak in the duet from Act III, it is also thanks to the discreet, maybe traditional, but totally faithful staging by David Alagna, Robertos brother and composer (“The Last day of a Condemned Man”, created in Paris in 2007, recorded by DG). In charge of the set design, enhanced by the warm lighting by Aldo Solbiati and the costumes by Louis Désiré (wow, Charlotte’s scarlet dress!), David Alagna recreates all an atmosphere without saying it. You completely believe in it, the setting is so realistic that you would think you are there! Finally, we must mention Alain Guingal and his orchestra in beautiful shape, […]. In conclusion, this is an ideal Werther, without much “modernist” innovation perhaps, but that must imperatively be recommended to any opera lover, the most experienced of course, but especially the beginners also: there is no more beautiful introduction to one of the greatest jewels of French opera than this DVD!
